Toucan Workflow: Transferring Scans

  1. From the home screen, tap the tiny right arrow button below the NEW SCAN button1
  2. Click the word “select” in the upper right2
  3. Select the scans you want to export and hit the square with a right arrow button in the bottom right of the screen
  4. The next screen lets you select between WiFi or USB Drive as the export target and you can select to export Scan Data or Model File (it’ll turn a mesh into the desired model file before exporting)

USB Drive

USB drive transfers are straightforward. Click the button. Usually just works.

The USB Drive must be formatted exFAT with a Master Boot Record (MBR) scheme. Otherwise, the Toucan will show “disk full” when trying to write to it.3

WiFi

  1. First launch JM Studio and click “Enter”

The app will immediately throw an error dialog about a missing calibration file. Click “OK” which will bring you to the calibration import panel (that I’ve never gotten to work). Cancel that. You’ll get another error dialog. Click “OK”. Then JM Studio will switch to Edit Mode (behind the dialog) and you can actually import from device.4

  2. Select File → Import from Device

This brings up a dialog with a QR code and some instructions. The QR code? It takes you to a google search of your IP addresses?!?! Ignore it all, but don’t close that dialog (which, btw, is closed by clicking the red dot in the upper left).

  3. Type in or select your IP on the Toucan and click OK

The transfer will start after a bit of pre-processing.

  4. Once transferred, turn off the Toucan. You’re (hopefully) done with it for this scan!

  1. This really should be a “select” button in that location — a bit bigger and more obvious finger target.

  2. All operations on this screen first start by selecting some number of scans. You should be in “select” mode when you enter the screen with (align) and (export) buttons at the bottom right.

  3. Not a helpful error message. Toucan should tell you why it can’t write to an empty disk that is of an unrecognized format. Nice to have would be a “format disk” option in Settings.

  4. Yeah, this is terrible UX. “Enter”? Calibration error immediately? Cancel what now? Why can’t I just start in Edit Mode directly?
